When you’re out on the road for months at a time, you always have to take inventory when you wake up. Where am I? What city am I in? Whose bed? Those questions are usually pretty easy to answer. If you can’t, opening the tour bus door or checking your phone will usually clear things up. And if you think you’re in Kansas when you’re actually in Missouri, that’ll all sort itself out as the day goes on too.

I’m on Minnow Island. In a cabin that my brother lured me to under false pretenses. That I remember.

But there’s a more important question you have to ask yourself after those special, epic nights that never seem to end. I’ve had amazing nights that I never even dreamed of when I was just strumming my guitar in my small town. I’ve drunk bourbon with Bill Murray. The whole time we were drinking together, he told me no one would believe me. And you know what? I didn’t believe it while it was happening. I still don’t believe it now.

That’s the most important question you ask yourself in the morning light, after the really special nights. Did that really happen? That’s what I’m asking myself now. Did I really have sex with the girl who’s been driving me crazy since we were teenagers? The woman I haven’t been able to stop thinking about, even while I was playing to a room full of a thousand other women? I didn’t believe it while it was happening. And I don’t quite believe it now.

It’s fucking terrifying how looking at her pretty face in the morning light is making me feel. I’m hearing so many melodies in my head, but no lyrics. The words will come—I know they will. I just want to think about Vera. It’s like my brain doesn’t quite trust that I’m finally allowing it to just focus on her.

She stirs. I push the hair away from her neck and stare at that little butterfly tattoo, deciding to test my theory. I press my lips against it, kissing it the way I’d kiss her mouth. Eyes still closed, I feel the muscles in her neck relax completely as she exposes her neck to me. She rolls her hips and gives a quiet, pleasant moan. I was right. She loves being kissed there. And I love kissing her there.

“You’re still here…” she whispers, seeming to take the same inventory I just did.

I smile down at her, tracing the outline of the butterfly on her neck. “We’re trapped here, remember?”

She buries her face in the pillow for a second and then scrunches up her face and says, “I had this
